5.3.2 PostalCare User Session Time Out

The PostalCare User Session Time Out feature is used to limit the time that users can be logged into the PostalCare system, but are not actively working in it.

The drop-down list displays the following session time out options:

The default PostalCare User Session Time Out is Never. Select the session time out you want from the drop-down list.

5.3.3 Bypass Mode

The Bypass Mode setting is used to run PostalCare without processing any emails.

This allows the organization to ensure that all the servers are configured correctly and running smoothly before implementing the PostalCare filtering processes.

In Bypass Mode, PostalCare is actually running, but not actively filtering emails. However, statistics are kept and displayed as if the emails are being filtered. This allows you to see how effective PostalCare would have been had it been running normally.

When PostalCare is first installed, Bypass Mode is enabled (turned on) by default. The License Key for this organization must be entered into the General window ("General" in the Main Menu) in order to disable Bypass Mode.

To disable Bypass Mode, select the radio button beside No. To re-enable Bypass Mode, select the radio button beside Yes.

5.3.4 Email Delay Delivery Interval

The Email Delivery Delay Interval is used to define how long to delay emails received by PostalCare in order to determine if that email is spam.

The default Email Delivery Delay Interval is set to 10 seconds.

5.3.5 DNSBL

The DNSBL feature is available for System Administrators to select a third-party DNSBL list to use in PostalCare.

A DNSBL is a DNS (domain name service)-based spam blocking list used to reject or filter criteria. See www.dnsbl.com for more information on DNSBL.

Click on the select drop-down list arrow to view and select the default DNSBL choices that are configured into PostalCare.

You may also choose to use a DNSBL list that is not in the default list by first selecting Other in the DNSBL drop-down list, then typing the DNSBL address into the Other DNSBL field.

Note

It is strongly recommended that appropriate research is done prior to implementing any DNSBL list. See www.dnsbl.com for more information on DNSBL.

5.3.6 Other DNSBL

To specify a different (other) DNSBL list, first select Other in the drop-down list beside DNSBL.

Then type in the address of the DNSBL list you want to use into the Other DNSBL field. For example:

DNSBL:
Other DNSBL:

Note

It is strongly recommended that appropriate research is done prior to implementing any DNSBL list. See www.dnsbl.com for more information on DNSBL.

5.3.7 Zombie Spammer Threshold

The Zombie Spammer Threshold setting allows the you to decide if you want PostalCare to detect computers using this organization's SMTP server that have possibly been taken over by spammers.

A Spam Zombie is a computer (usually with a high-speed Internet connection) that is being exploited by spammers to send out huge volumes of spam email. Incorrectly installed software and/or improperly secured computers allow viruses to infect the machine which then allow the spammers in to send their spam.

PostalCare can detect if a computer is sending large volumes of emails out, and if the volume exceeds the specified Zombie Spammer Threshold in a 1-hour time frame, an Alert Message is displayed in the General window for System Administrators.

The Zombie Spammer Alert details include:

To enable the Zombie Spammer Threshold, select the Enable radio button. Then type in a number for the threshold in the Zombie Spammer Threshold? field. This number should be the maximum number of emails allowed to be sent by any given sender during a 1-hour time period before assuming the computer has been exploited by a spammer. The default threshold is set to 500.

To disable the Zombie Spammer Threshold, select the Disable radio button.

5.3.8 postalcare_alerts.log Location

The postalcare_alerts.log Location field is where you can specify the where to save the logfile of PostalCare Alert messages.

The default logfile location is:

  postalcare_alerts.log Location: c:\postalcare\data\

To change the location, delete the default path and type in the new path in the same format as the default.

5.3.9 Email Relays Allowed

The Email Relays Allowed settings allow specified email relays to this organization's SMTP server. This is helpful for securely allowing remote employees (for example) to send email through the SMTP server even though their IP address is an outside one.

The options for allowing email relays are:

The Clear username and password after authentication checkbox allows clear the authentication username and password after the PostalCare has processed the email. This setting is used mainly in the case of when the real SMTP server does not support usernames and passwords for authentication. The real SMTP server then rejects the email because it doesn't know how to deal with it.

Place a checkmark in the checkbox to clear the authentication username and password before the email is sent to the real SMTP server. Remove the checkmark if you want the username and password to remain.

5.3.10 Save Spam Emails

The Save Spam Emails? option allows you to save spam emails for further analysis. The default setting is No.

Note

Since the number of spam emails is typically extremely high, a huge amount of disk space is required to save spam emails.

5.3.11 Spam Retention

The Spam Retention field allows you to choose how long to save blocked or spam emails if the option to save spam emails has been selected as "Yes". A large amount of disk space is required to save blocked or spam emails. This setting causes PostalCare to automatically delete the emails from disk when the specified spam retention time has been reached.

The spam retention options available are:

5.3.12 spam_email.ars Location

spam_email.ars Location is the device name and location of where you want to store all of the spam and blocked emails that PostalCare filters out.

Note: Storage of these emails requires a significant amount of disk space.

The SheerPower database file where the spam and blocked emails are stored is called:

  spam_email.ars

This file name cannot be changed.

Type in the device name and location of where you want to store the spam and blocked emails.

For example:

  e:\postalcare\spam

The default location is:

  c:\postalcare\data\

Once you have completed maintaining the General Settings for PostalCare, click on the Save & Return to Administrative Settings button to save your changes and return to the main menu.

5.4 SMTP Servers

The SMTP Servers are the IP addresses of:

The PostalCare SMTP Server is the server running PostalCare which receives the incoming emails to be delivered to this organization. It then processes the emails and forwards them on to the real SMTP server.

The Real SMTP Server is the server that receives the allowed emails from the PostalCare server, then delivers the emails to the recipients.

The Alternate SMTP Servers are alternate servers available in the event that the real SMTP server fails. Up to 3 alternate SMTP servers can be specified.
