Katherine Lee (Kay) Kerker was the second child of Thomas William Kerker and Lois Martha Bicknese. She was born in 1943. She was always called Kay, and grew up in the Los Angeles area, primarily in Torrance.
Kay attended UC Berkeley and received her MD degree there. While at the university, she met and married Dennis Malkasian, whose family is from Fresno. Kay and Denny settled in Huntington Beach, and had two sons:
After leaving medicine for several years to raise a family, Kay returned to it in the early '90s, starting a second successful career.
