Richard Kerker was born in St Paul, Minnesota, in 1916. He was the third child of Thomas (Dagobert) Kerker and Sophie Ann Jensen. He attended Cretin High School and the University of Minnesota, where he got a degree in engineering, and fought in World War II.

Dick married Mary Adele Schranz, also from St Paul, and they had six children.

Dick worked most of his career as an engineer for Douglas Aircraft, later McDonnell-Douglas. Mary and Dick moved to Los Angeles after World War II, and lived in the Westchester area near the LA Airport. They were forced to sell their original house for the expansion of the airport, and moved to another a few miles away. Dick has survived several heart attacks.
