Joseph Jerome Lauer was born on May 20, 1942, the oldest child of Albert Joseph Lauer and Marian Louise (Mernie) Kerker.
Joe attended St Columba and St Therese grade schools, St Thomas Military Academy for high school, and St John's University, Collegeville, Minn., where he graduated Egregia cum Laude in History. He got his masters and doctorate in African History at the University of Wisconsin (Madison), and later obtained a Masters in Library Science.
Joe married Anne Kleiner of Madison at the Newman Center Chapel in Madison. They had one daughter, Sarah Lauer.
Joseph Lauer was on the staff and faculty of several universities, including Michigan State U. in East Lansing, the State U. of NY at Buffalo, UCLA, and later East Lansing again.
