Captain Abraham Van Keuren was the sixth child and second son of Tjerck Matthysen Van Keuren and Maritje Ten Eyck. He was born on 23 Sep 1711 in Kingston, New York, and died on 12 Oct 1776 in Kingston. On 12 Nov 1743 he married Garritje Nieuwkirk (Newkirk) in Kingston. They had eight children.

This Abraham is the first of three Abrahams in this line. For clarity he is often called Captain Abraham, to distinguish him from his grandson Abraham G., and his great-grandson Abraham.

Captain Abraham was very active in the affairs of Kingston, NY. He was the last colonial supervisor of Kingston, mayor of the city, and a member of the Provincial Congress. He was a member of the Committee for Safety and a Captain in one of the Ulster Regiments (Col. Snyder's). Being an Associator of Kingston, as well as his Captaincy, qualifies him as a performer of "Patriotic Service", making his descendants eligible for membership in the DAR and the SAR.
