Remote Device Facility (RDF) is a software product that allows you to access a device that is physically connected to another computer in your OpenVMS Cluster or DECNET based network. This ability to access a remote device allows a node that does not have a device to perform device operations as though it had a local device.
RDF is a client/server based software product. The SERVER is the node providing the service. The service is a device physically connected to the server. The CLIENT is the node wishing to access the served (remote) device.
In addition to OpenVMS machines, RDF also allows most UNIX systems to access OpenVMS tape devices using the RMT protocol. The RMT protocol is available on most standard UNIX systems.
The UNIX system is required to have the standard RSH, RDUMP and RRESTORE installed, as well as a TCP/IP connection to the OpenVMS RDserver machine via UCX.
RDF has been the number one choice for years amongst OpenVMS system managers and Digital Equipment Corporation for providing remote tape and disk access across the network.
RDF capabilities include:
RDF offers several other powerful features including:
Best of all RDF is incredibly easy to use. It installs in minutes. Operators only need to learn four commands to use RDF.
