Chapter 5
    Using the IRIS Utilities

The IRIS utilities, controlled by IRIS Manager, allow you to review session information, create reports, watch sessions, play back recorded sessions, etc. All of these procedures can be executed by selecting options from the IRIS - INTOUCH Remote Interactive Supervisor menu system.

    5.1 The IRIS Menu

After IRIS Manager is initialized, the IRIS - INTOUCH Remote Interactive Supervisor main menu is displayed. (Appendix A, Summary of IRIS Manager Menus, describes other menus.)

    +--------------IRIS - INTOUCH Remote Interactive Supervisor V1.0---------------+

Playback
Archive Playback
     +---------------------+

    The main menu selections are:
Sessions Display and watch active sessions, play back recorded sessions
Status Display status information for the network or IRIS
      Reports Create reports
Maintenance Maintain domains, purge and archive records
      General Miscellaneous procedures
      Advanced Perform system procedures
      Exit Exit IRIS Manager

    5.2 Selecting Menu Items

Menu items or options are displayed on the IRIS - INTOUCH Remote Interactive Supervisor menu screen.

To select a specific item, use the mouse to locate the item and then click to execute that item. Or you can use the arrow keys to select a menu item, and press the [Return] key to execute that item.

An item can also be selected by entering the item name. You need to enter only as many characters of the item name as is necessary to distinguish the item from all other items on the menu.

Some menu items have submenus. To select an item from a submenu, use the mouse or arrow keys to select an item, and click or press [Return] to execute the item.

If you select the wrong menu or submenu item, press the "\" (backslash) key and you are returned to the menu or submenu.

    5.3 Exiting and Backing Up

From anywhere within IRIS you can EXIT the current procedure or BACK UP to a previous prompt or menu.

Select the EXIT option or enter the word EXIT to get out of a menu procedure and return to the previous menu. To exit out of the IRIS Manager main menu, select the "Exit" option.

Press the "\" key to back up to the previous prompt or, if you are at the first prompt of a menu item, to go back to the menu.

    5.4 Entering Dates

In some procedures, you are asked to enter dates. For example:

    Begin date (MMDDYYYY)? ___________

You can enter the date in MMDDYYYY format as the prompt shows, or use another date format. The following date formats are allowed:
    Format Example
    MMDDYYYY 11161999
    MMDDYY 111699
    DD-MON-YYYY 16-Nov-1999
    DD-MON-YY 16-Nov-99

    5.5 Online Help System

Extensive HELP is always available. The help system provides help for menu items as well as input prompts.

To get help at any time, just press the [Help] key. The screen clears and the help text is displayed.

In some cases you are also presented with a list of related help topics. If you are interested in a related topic, just enter the topic name when prompted. You need to enter only as many characters of the topic as is necessary to distinguish the topic from all other topics.

When you have finished getting the help that you need, press [Return] or enter EXIT at the "Topic?" prompt. The help screen is replaced with the screen that was displayed before you requested help information.

    5.5.1 Examples

To get help on a menu or submenu item, highlight the item by using the arrow keys or by typing the menu item name. The help system displays information about that item.

For example, if you highlight Maintenance and press [Help], the following information is displayed:

    MAINTENANCE

The MAINTENANCE menu option displays a submenu of items that include:

Domains - Add, change, delete domain name and IP address data
Purge and Archive Records - Purge and/or archive recording
                                    and/or audit records

    Related topics:

    domain_maint purge help_topic
    menu_navigation iris_main_menu

    Topic?

The help text tells about the Maintenance submenu items. It also shows a list of related topics. If you want information on domains, you can type in domain_maint and press [Return]. If you want information on how to move around in the menu system, you can enter menu_nav. You can enter topics whenever the "Topic?" prompt is displayed. To get out of the help system, press [Return] or type EXIT at the "Topic?" prompt.

To get help when at an input prompt (where you type in data or select an item from a pop-up menu), just press the [Help] key.

For example, if you are at the following prompt:

    Begin date (MMDDYYYY)? Earliest___

and press the [Help] key, you see:

    INC_ASK_BEGIN_DATE

Yes

                                 +---------+

    and press [Help], you see:

    Status Menu Procedures

    Example 6-1 Status Procedures

    +--------------IRIS - INTOUCH Remote Interactive Supervisor V1.0---------------+

IRIS
                 +------------+

    The Status menu options are:

    • Network --- Creates a report of Ethernet and TCP/IP statistics
    • IRIS --- Displays IRIS status data

    6.1 Network Status Option

                            +-----Status------+
Network

                            +-----------------+

Selecting the Network menu option creates a report of Ethernet statistics and TCP/IP statistics.

After the report is generated, you are asked for an output option (see Section 5.6.2, Report Output Options). After the report has been output, you are returned to the Status menu.

The following is an example of a network statistics report:

    6.2 IRIS Status Option

Network

                            +-----------------+

Selecting the IRIS menu option causes IRIS Manager to display information on the status of IRIS. The display shows information about the following:

    • Raw Packet Handling
    • IP Address Resolver
    • Session Summary
    • IRIS Configuration
    • System Overview
    • Packet Summary

The status information, such as handler packet counts, is automatically updated as the data changes.

When the IRIS menu option is selected, a new window is opened and the status data is displayed in this window. At this point, you are in the IRIS Status window --- i.e. this is the active window. If you want the status window to remain open, you can click on the IRIS Manager window and perform other procedures. The status window can also be iconized and later restored.

To close the IRIS status window, press any key and you will be returned to the Status menu.

The following is an example of the IRIS Status display:
